Stained glass restoration isn’t just for old or antique windows. It can also be used to repair windows that have suffered significant damage due to an accident, vandalism, or severe weather. Our recent efforts for the Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church is a good example. For this stained glass restoration project, our Denver team worked with skill and expertise to restore a set of windows that had been severely damaged by a violent storm. Hopewell Church: Stained Glass Restoration for Storm Damage
We were contacted by the committee members of the Hopewell Church. A severe thunderstorm had recently swept through the area and damaged the church’s beloved stained glass. Two out of the three windows were severely impacted. Of the six individual panels, three had been shattered. We worked closely with the church to develop a solution that’s was both cost-effective and aesthetic.
Techniques & Repair Methods
The challenging part of this situation with the Hopewell Church was that the stained glass windows were very old and the original glass was no longer being manufactured. We searched long and hard, but we could not find a suitable replacement. All options had either a different texture or slightly different color. If we were to rebuild the three missing panels with new glass, they wouldn’t match the old ones.
Therefore, we decided the best option was to take all of the panels apart, even the three that had not been damaged. This way, we could mix the old and new glass together. All panels would include a combination of both the new glass and the old glass. Doing this allowed them to match each other and look as if they belonging to the same set.
Not only was this the more aesthetic option, but it was also the more economical choice. Because we were able to reuse some of the original materials, the repairs were much more affordable. The church was very pleased with this outcome.
