Visiting Stained Glass Around the World: The Modern Edition

Modern Stained Glass is Beautiful

While stained glass is an ancient art, contemporary artists are making new and innovative twists to the art form. Older designs like religious imagery, flowers, and Celtic knots popular in churches and palaces in old Europe as well as Victorian mansions are being reimagined into modern stained glass visions that are equally as stunning.

Only your imagination is your limit to updating your Denver home, business, or church with modern stained glass. Neighbors from Park Hill to Cherry Creek will marvel at your property as it shines bright with new stained glass art. Here are some examples of modern stained glass around the world featured in the New York Times and My Modern Met to get your creative juices flowing:

Museum Architecture Using Modern Stained Glass

Take a look at The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision as a vibrant example of modern architecture using modern stained glass. Dutch architects Willen Jan Neutelings and Michiel Riedijk envisioned this piece of art as a critique of mass advertising and marketing and affirmation of artful architectural work. Brightly colored squares cover much of the half of this cube-shaped building that is overground. Beneath, it houses a museum, broadcasting archives, and offices in the city of Hilversum in the Netherlands.

Modern Stained Glass Inspired by Nature

Flora Jamieson is a UK-based artist who is inspired by graphic design, nature, organic forms, and geometric patterns. Her contemporary design aesthetic is combined with a traditional craft to create stained glass like this one of a tree covered in colorful, cheery birds and animals.
She says she delights in “selecting just the right tones and shades so that they sing out next to each other” when she creates her modern stained glass artworks.

Cathedral with Modern Stained Glass

The late German artist Sigmar Polke crafted these bold stained glass panels in 2009 for the Grossmünster Cathedral in Zürich. In this example of modern stained glass, Polke cut thin slices of agate mosaics to create the look of beautifully colorful geode crystals dazzling in the sunlight in seven panels for the cathedral.
