With the need for stained glass repair, Denver homeowners are sometimes stumped as to whether or not it’s worth it. Should they leave their damaged stained glass window – perhaps an antique – the way it is, or try to find out how much it will cost to repair? Or perhaps should they have it replaced with a brand new stained glass window in the same pattern, or maybe a new and different one.
To answer those questions, we’d have to see the window or stained glass panel in question. When it comes to stained glass repair, Denver stained glass artisans have many techniques available to restore it to its original beauty. It all depends on what has happened to it over the years. Here is a list of things that can happen to a stained glass window. And all of them can be repaired!
1. Broken, chipped, cracked, or missing pieces of glass. Even if your window is an antique, we can almost always match the glass, restoring the piece to its original appearance.
2. Dirty, grimy, clouded over. We can clean and polish it, and if grime has gotten into the lead caming that holds it together, we can disassemble it, clean each and every piece of glass, and reassemble it. Except for the clean glowing look, you’ll never know we took it apart.
3. The whole window is bowing, no longer flat in the frame. This can happen from heavy winds over the years. Glass cannot stretch, or shrink for that matter, but the lead or copper strips (called caming) that hold the piece together can. If that happens, the glass might also become loose and in danger of falling out altogether.
4. The caming can become brittle or cracked. Again, we will disassemble all the pieces of glass and reassemble them with new caming, and because we use special dark leads, it will still look like an old window.
Excellent stained glass repair, Denver artisans know, is founded on a respect and appreciation for the masters who came before. Here at Stained Glass Denver, we consider it an honor to restore older, antique windows. We love to see the craftsmanship of old and love to take a grungy, broken window and bring it back to life.
Many older Denver homes were built with stained glass windows that are cherished by their owners. If that is the case with your home, please do not even consider letting your window remain damaged, when we can come, assess the damage, remove the window, repair it in our studio, and reinstall it.
